Modern bowling originated in Europe during the Middle Ages. The game at that time had nine pins. Bowling as you know it today began in the mid-1800s. The sport was very popular with gamblers. So much so that Connecticut outlawed nine-pin bowling in 1841 So gamblers added another pin. After World War Two and with the invention of the automated pinspotter, there was suddenly a boom in bowling in the United States. The rest is history. Rules and regulations

The rules of bowling are regulated by the United States Bowling Congress. The bowling lane is 60 feet from the foul line to the first pin. The pins are 15 inches tall ad about 4.7 inches wide where the ball makes contact. The weight is about 3 pounds, 6 ounces. The ball weighs up to 16 pounds. A game of bowling is made up of 10 frames. In each frame, the person has two chances to knock down as many pins as possible. If all pins are knocked down on the first shot, that is a strike. If all ten are knocked down with two hits, then it is a spare. If a strike or spare occurs in the 10th frame, then the player is awarded an additional ball. The total possible points is 300 for a perfect game.
